This activity is for all ages!
This activity is virtual and requires you to provide your own supplies -- Grocery Bags for Food Collection and Sorting Donations Received, Food Drive Flyers (template HERE). Families who sign up for this event will receive a separate email with detailed instructions and further information about our nonprofit partner and how we can help! Feel free to do this activity when convenient for your family. Please plan to drop off donations to our bins by Wednesday, December 16th.
This Holiday Season when so many are in need, we are especially grateful that we have food to eat and a family to care for us. Let's help our neighbors who are in need now. The Heights Interfaith Ministries is a “Client Choice” Pantry, which means that its clients make their own food selections with the help of volunteers. HIM provides meat, eggs, produce and toiletries with each order, and serves all who seek help residing in the Houston area.
At this time, HIM is in dire need of nonperishable foods for their pantry. Because of increased demand, they cannot keep up with what is needed for their clients through their usual supply chain. They have asked that our Generation SERVE volunteers help with a Holiday Food Drive.
This is the Pick Up and Sort portion of the Food Drive project. On Saturday, December 5th, volunteers will make a Food Drive flyer, like the one HERE, and attach it to empty grocery bags. Then volunteers will distribute the bags by dropping them off at the front porch or door of their neighbors' homes, requesting that they help fill the bag with non-perishable foods, such as canned veggies in a bag, canned beans, meals in a can, pasta, boxed meals (mac & cheese, etc), peanut butter, dry rice, dry beans. Be sure to sign up for the HIM Food Drive Drop Off Activity on our calendar for December 5th as well!
The next Saturday,December 12th, volunteers will return to their neighbors' homes to pick up the donations in a safe, socially distanced way and take them home to sort. HIM requests that we help them sort like items together, such as canned veggies in 1 bag, canned beans in another, meals in a can in another, pasta etc. Further instructions will be provided to you upon sign up.
You can drop off donations to our Generation SERVE bins at 801 Bering Dr, 77057, or directly to the HIM Pantry at 3523 Beauchamp St.
