This activity is for all ages!

This activity is virtual and requires you to provide your own supplies - bag to collect books, paper, scissors, markers, crayons or stickers. Families who sign up for this event will receive a separate email with detailed instructions and further information about our nonprofit partner and how we can help!

We are excited to help our nonprofit partner Literacy Now with its inaugural Houston Reads Day coming on March 2nd!  On Houston Reads Day, 400 volunteers will read virtually for 15 minutes via Microsoft Teams at 25 HISD Elementary Schools to 10,000 K-3rd grade students.* Generation SERVE volunteers can help by hosting porch pick up book drives to collect new primary books for the libraries of 25 HISD schools participating in Houston Reads Day and by making bookmarks to give with the books we collect! Our goal is to collect 25 new books for 25 HISD libraries!

To host your own NEW book drive for the elementary school libraries of HISD Houston Reads Day participating schools, make a Generation SERVE flyer or you can use one we have HERE. Collect grocery sized paper or reuseable bags or boxes and leave them on your neighbors' porch with a note that you will return in 1 week to collect what they can donate. Please be sure to request NEW books only please! Feel free to get creative to host the book drive! In addition to the porch pick up book drive, you also can ask your friends and neighbors to donate new books in a social media campaign, or with phone calls, emails, or letters.

You can drop off your new book donations [PLEASE MARK THAT THEY ARE FOR HOUSTON READS DAY/ LITERACY NOW] to our Generation SERVE bins located at Houston Congregation for Reform Judaism (HCRJ) located at 801 Bering Drive on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00-1:00 or on Sundays from 9:00-11:00. Please try to drop off the books by Thursday, February 18th.
