Activity Description

Help Books Between Kids process book donations at their warehouse. Projects vary based on needs but might include counting or inventorying donations, sorting books, boxing books, helping to stock the sorting tables, preparing boxes of books to be sent off to schools, and cleaning the warehouse.

Note: You need to RSVP for this activity through Generation SERVE so we can track participation and service hours and communicate; however, Books Between Kids requests that you also register with them

Activity Requirements

  • This activity is great for children ages 8 & up. Books Between Kids requests kids ages 8-13 have one parent attend as well or a ratio of 1 parent for every 2 kids aged 8-13.
  • Books Between Kids requests all volunteers under the age of 18 to print out the BBK Minor Liability Waiver and bring the complete and signed waiver to the volunteer shift. Volunteers under the age of 18 without a signed BBK Minor Liability Waiver will not be permitted to volunteer at the warehouse.
  • Please wear closed-toe shoes. The warehouse is not climate controlled, so consider the outside temperature when planning your attire and dress in layers, if needed.
  • Generation SERVE adheres to the following COVID-19 policies to help keep your family and ours safe. We will continue to respect our partners' mask requirements as well as your family's decision around wearing masks.

More About Our Partner

Books Between Kids is a non-profit organization serving Houston’s at-risk children by providing them with books to build their own home libraries.

About 85% of Houston ISD’s elementary-aged children live at or below the poverty line. Priorities for these children and their families are food, clothing and shelter – all other items fall into the category of “want”. Research has shown that children growing up in homes without books, where books are considered a luxury, are less likely to complete a basic education than their peers who do have books available at home (University of Nevada, 2010).

Books Between Kids strives to change this by collecting gently used books and distributing them to children in need.

Support Generation SERVE

We provide supplies and an Activity Lead for every activity. A $30 donation would help us cover the costs for this activity! You also can become a family sponsor to support us in providing fun volunteer opportunities for other families! Thank you for your support and generosity! We appreciate it!
